Pattern Mixing 101

PATTERN MIXING 101

Hey everyone! Pattern mixing is an easy way to elevate an outfit to the next level and make it look so put-together. However, for many people, it can seem intimidating and they might not know where to start. Today, I’m going to share three looks I put together mixing patterns and a guide to how you can pattern mix with pieces you already have in your closet!

Start Small
(earrings from Claire’s, bodysuit from Garage, jeans from Target, booties from Steve Madden)
The easiest way to experiment with pattern mixing without going overboard is to start with your accessories. Animal print can be considered a neutral and will go with just about anything! My leopard print feather earrings and shoes add a slightly bohemian feel to my floral bodysuit and jeans combo. The jeans in between my bodysuit and shoes break up the patterns and give a softer look than wearing the two patterns right next to each other.

Pay Attention to Color
(dress from Hollister, cardigan from Target, boots from dv for Target)
Color is so important in pattern mixing! A foolproof way to know if your patterns are working together is to make sure they contain similar color schemes. Black and white is the easiest starting point. Here, my gingham dress pairs well with my tribal print cardigan because they both contain black and white. Black boots stay in the color scheme and tie the look together.

Go With Your Gut
(cami from Hollister, polka dot top from Forever 21, jeans from Target, booties from DSW, necklace from Stella & Dot)
When in doubt, go with your gut. If you think something looks off or you feel uncomfortable in it, just try something else until it clicks. You can usually tell when something you’re wearing doesn’t feel like you. Be true to your sense of style and keep experimenting until you find something you like. And when all else fails, polka dots and floral is always a safe bet! Keep all other accessories minimal to let the patterns shine.

The point of pattern mixing is to have fun with your outfits! As long as you are happy with the end result and feel confident, it’ll show!
